Na Lamaku, The Torch Bearers
Celebrating and sharing the local culture, Na Lamaku, the resort’s Cultural Committee, creates a special sense of place through education, storytelling and rich cultural experiences for guests, associates and the community. Sharing “mana’o” or thoughts or knowledge, committee members influence activities and events within the resort.
“Aloha has different meanings, a greeting of hospitality, love and kindness, instinctively giving and sharing from one one’s heart.” says Director of Fun and Cultural Advisor, Jack Stone. "By incorporating the Hawaiian Culture into the resort's activities for guests and even sharing "mo'olelo" or stories with the associates, it's all a great way to share aloha."
Diving in to Hawaiian history, the committee and all associates are able to share the rich stories of the Ka’anapali area. From the ancient “Battle of Koko O Na Moku” where royalty, chiefs and warriors fought in a fierce battle of thousands to conquer Maui to the era of the Gay 90’s (1890’s) where a Horse Race track resided right on the sands in front of the resort. Even a love story exists during the times of demigods where a young goddess’ lover is put to sleep as a rock and when she dies, she begs the gods to put her near her beloved, where today, the two still reside.
Look out for the committee's monthly Aloha Friday Program or ask any associate about a "mo'olelo" they'd like to share.
